Course Description
This unit specifies the mandatory work health and safety training required prior to undertaking construction work. The unit requires the person to demonstrate personal awareness and knowledge of health and safety legislative requirements in order to work safely and prevent injury or harm to self and others.
Course Content
This unit specifies the outcomes required to undertake Occupational Health & Safety / Work Health & Safety (OHS/WHS) induction training within the construction industry.
This course includes:
- Identify health and safety legislative requirements of construction work
- Identify construction hazards and risk control measures.
- Identify health and safety communication and reporting processes
- Identify incident and emergency response procedures

It also covers correctly selecting and fitting common personal protective equipment (PPE) used for construction work.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to his unit.
This unit meets the general construction induction training requirements of:
- Part 1.1 Definitions and Part 6.5 of the Model Work Health and Safety Regulations;
- Division 11 of Part 3 of the Occupational Safely and Health Regulations 1996 for Western Australia; and
- Division 3 of Part 5.1 of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2007 for Victoria
Selection Criteria
- Minimum 14 years
- 100 points ID check – Originals only that show photo, date of birth, signature & current residential address
- Numeracy skills to:
- Locate and recognise numbers commonly used in safety signs
- Oral communication skills to:
- Ask questions to clarify instructions
- Listen to instructions to identify key safety information
- Tell another person about a construction problem or hazard
- Reading skills to:
- Follow simple pictorial safety instructions
- Follow simple safety instructions that are written in English
- Problem-solving skills to:
- Select risk control measures
- Written skills to:
- Successful completion of LLND skills assessment (if necessary)
Qualification
- Statement of Attainment –issued by HPA Training
- Statement of Training Certificate – Issued by SafeWork NSW on the day of training
- SafeWork NSW White Card – issued by SafeWork NSW

- 1 day training inclusive of assessment – HPA Training

Mode of Assessment
SafeWork NSW has developed an assessment toolkit to meet the Unit of Competency Assessment requirements. This tool is mandatory.
Certification
On successful completion of this course, participants will be issued with a SafeWork NSW Statement of Training Certificate that you can use as an interim licence until your card arrives. The statement is valid for 60 days, but most cards are issued in less than 30 days. If you do not receive your card, give SafeWork NSW a call on 13 10 50.
Locations
The course can be delivered at HPA’s Training Facility, HPA’s agreed sites or face to face in the
workplace at your site providing the following requirements are met;
- Signed agreement to train on site
- All necessary equipment on HPA Trainings equipment list available and in good condition
- Training room with tables, chairs and screen (or blank wall for a projector)
